Drawn in 1814, this ground floor plan of a U.S. arsenal in Pennsylvania is part of the Library of Congress's architecture, design, and engineering collection. The building it shows was part of the federal government's effort during the War of 1812 to store and supply weapons and ammunition away from the coast. Pittsburgh, at the head of the Ohio River and an early center of iron and boatbuilding, was a natural site for such a depot. Plans like this one reveal how military storage was laid out at the time, with rooms and openings arranged for the secure keeping of arms and powder.
