This is a front elevation, a flat architectural drawing of the building's face with no perspective, of an armory built as a U.S. Arsenal in Pennsylvania in 1814. The War of 1812 pushed the young republic to secure its own stores and munitions away from the coast, and inland federal arsenals like this one served that need. The drawing belongs to the Library of Congress's collection of American architectural and engineering drawings, where such plans were kept as records of how federal military buildings were designed. Because the elevation shows only outlines, windows and doorways, it lets a viewer judge the building's proportions directly.
