Lewiston, Maine, in 1910 was a mill city on the Androscoggin River, where the falls supplied the power for its cotton textile works. The Bates Manufacturing Company's mills dominated the riverfront, and much of the workforce was made up of French-Canadian families who had moved south from Quebec in the decades after the Civil War. Parish churches, mutual aid societies, and neighborhoods of wood-frame housing reflected that mix of French, Irish, and older Yankee residents, and the mill schedule set the rhythm of daily life. Across the river lay Auburn, and together the two towns formed the industrial heart of the state's interior. Bates College, nearby, took its name from Benjamin E. Bates, a member of the family behind the company.
