Lewiston in 1910 was a Maine city whose river-powered mills set the pace of work, and its Catholic parishes, with their tall spires, rose as prominently over the streets as the mill chimneys did. Many of its French-speaking families built a world of parish schools, fraternal societies, and French-language newspapers, which kept their language and faith strong even as their children learned English in public classrooms. Politically, Maine was still in its long stretch of Republican dominance, and the state's prohibition law, in force since 1851, shaped arguments in city halls and taverns alike. A view from high ground would have shown a city where people kept time by church feasts and factory schedules as much as by the calendar.
