Portland, Maine, in 1910 was a working port and rail center on Casco Bay, with its waterfront shaped by coastal steamers, the Maine Central Railroad's presence, and the electric streetcars that ran along Congress Street and out to the suburbs. Shipping and manufacturing kept the city busy, and the Portland Company, a longtime builder of railroad locomotives and cars, was among the major employers on the eastern side of town. Residents often called the city the Forest City, a nickname tied to its wooded peninsula and its shade trees, and many of them thought of Portland as the state's commercial center. The city was also growing as immigrants from Ireland, Canada, and southern and eastern Europe arrived to work on the docks, in the mills, and on the railroads.
