Portland Harbor in 1910 was the working front of a city that depended on the sea for its livelihood. Casco Bay Lines ferries carried islanders and summer visitors out to Peaks, Cushing and Great Diamond islands, while Fort Gorges, a granite fort begun in the late 1850s and still standing in the channel, reminded residents of the defenses that once guarded the approach. Tugs, fishing boats and cargo vessels worked in close quarters along the waterfront below Munjoy Hill. Merchant and shipping families kept their offices facing the water, and many of the city's working families lived in the nearby Munjoy and Bayside neighborhoods.
