Seal Harbor, Maine, in 1927 was a summer village on Mount Desert Island, where the town's year-round life of fishing, lobstering, and boatbuilding ran alongside a large seasonal population of wealthy families. Many of them had come from Boston, Philadelphia, and New York over the previous half century, building shingled cottages and summer estates on the rocky shore and in the hills above the water. The island's landscape was already drawing national attention, and in the 1910s and 1920s summer residents, including John D. Rockefeller Jr., were donating land and funding trails and carriage roads that would become part of what is now Acadia National Park. Residents of the area would have known Seal Harbor as a quiet, well-kept resort community, one of several villages strung along the island's coast.
