Bar Harbor, on Mount Desert Island off the Maine coast, was in 1904 a well-known summer colony for wealthy families from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, who built large cottages on the hills above the town. The village had earlier depended on fishing and boatbuilding, but by the early 1900s summer visitors supported its hotels, shops, and livery stables. Warships anchored in the harbor drew crowds of summer residents and townspeople, who watched boats run between the vessels and the wharves. Yacht races, carriage drives along the shore roads, and dances at the hotels filled the season's social calendar.
