Portland, Maine, in 1910 was the state's largest city and one of the busiest ports on the Atlantic coast north of Boston. Its deep, ice-free harbor on Casco Bay handled coastal steamers, lumber and coal schooners, and winter shipments of Canadian grain and cargo that came down the Grand Trunk Railway to its terminal on the waterfront. The Portland Company, a long-established builder of locomotives and marine engines, employed many of the city's machinists and ironworkers. Residents still remembered the Great Fire of 1866, which destroyed much of the downtown, and the brick commercial blocks rebuilt after it lined the streets above the wharves. The harbor, with its ferries and working boats, was the city's daily center of commerce.
