Lewiston, Maine, in 1910 was a mill city built around the falls of the Androscoggin River, where dams and canals sent water power to textile works that employed much of the workforce. The Bates Manufacturing Company's cotton mills were the best known of these, and in the decades before 1910 the city had drawn many French-Canadian families from Quebec to work its looms and spinning rooms. Across the river lay Auburn, the two communities shared bridges and commerce, yet they remained separate municipalities with their own governments. Bates College, founded by Free Will Baptists, gave the east side of Lewiston a second identity as a college town. For most residents, the place was first a mill town, where the whistles marked the shifts.
