Lovell, a small town in Oxford County in western Maine, sat on the shore of Kezar Lake in 1910, a place where the hill farms and woodlots of the area met a steady summer trade. Many of the families who came to the lake stayed in boarding houses and cottages, and the summer season shaped much of the local livelihood alongside farming, lumbering, and small-scale trade. Maine's lake country was by then a familiar destination for visitors from Boston and other New England cities, who reached the region by rail and by coach. A view of the lake in 1910 would have shown a community that lived through the seasons, with its winters quiet and its summers busy.
