Brunswick, Maine, in 1910 was a small village arranged around Bowdoin College, and this panoramic view takes in the campus and the town spread along the Androscoggin River. The river's falls had long powered mills, and the community's working life still depended on that water and on the rail line that ran through town. Maine had been a dry state since 1851, so the college's own weekly, the *Bowdoin Orient*, and the lectures, debates and chapel services of the academic year counted for more in local conversation than saloons or street commerce did. Residents would have measured the seasons by the college calendar, with students leaving for summer and returning in the fall, and by the steady flow of visiting families who came to see their sons graduate.
