Brunswick, Maine, in 1910 was still a college town first, with Bowdoin's campus on the Androscoggin's bank anchoring the village. That year's talk often turned north, because Robert Peary, a Bowdoin graduate of the class of 1877, had announced in 1909 that he reached the North Pole. Residents followed the newspaper accounts of the controversy over his claim, and the college's ties to Arctic exploration gave the town a point of pride beyond its classrooms. Bowdoin's Walker Art Building, completed in 1894, gave townspeople a place to view paintings and sculpture on campus. Brunswick's public identity in 1910 rested less on any single industry than on the scholars and explorers its college sent out into the world.
