Bowdoin College and the town of Brunswick, Maine, shared the banks of the Androscoggin River in 1910, and the college's brick and stone halls set the tone for the community. Brunswick still drew much of its work from the river's mills, where cotton textile production had long provided jobs, and the Maine Central Railroad carried students, freight and summer visitors through the village. Bowdoin, founded in 1794, had educated Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Nathaniel Hawthorne, and by the 1900s its alumni and faculty were a source of local pride and a steady presence in Maine's professions and public life. Residents would have known Brunswick first as a college town, where commencement, the academic calendar and athletic rivalries shaped the year. Its tree-shaded streets gave the village a settled character that set it apart from the mill towns farther upriver.
