In 1906, Westbrook Seminary stood in Westbrook, Maine, a mill city on the Presumpscot River just west of Portland. The town had grown around its textile and manufacturing works, and Westbrook had become a city in 1891, so it was a place where factory wages and civic institutions shaped daily life. The seminary, a private academy that prepared young people for college and for teaching and business, was one of the town's best-known institutions and drew students from across southern Maine. Families in the area would have known the school as a source of local pride, while the rail and trolley lines linking Westbrook to Portland kept it close to the wider commercial life of the state's largest port city.
