Waterville, Maine, in 1909 was a mill town on the Kennebec River, where cotton and woolen production drove the local economy and drew workers from French-Canadian and Irish families. The Maine Central Railroad ran through the city, linking it to Portland and the wider rail network, and the river's falls powered the textile works that lined its banks. Colby College and the Baptist-affiliated Colby campus on the hill were already well established, giving the city a steady academic presence alongside its factory life. Residents in 1909 would have known Waterville as a busy industrial center in the Kennebec Valley, with its civic life centered on churches, schools, and the downtown commercial streets.
