Taken looking west from the Lake House on the shore of Blue Mountain Lake, this view shows the water as summer visitors of the late 1880s would have seen it. Seneca Ray Stoddard, a Glens Falls photographer who documented the Adirondacks for tourists, sold such scenes as numbered card views, and this one is catalogued as No. 588. The record rests on an old caption card, and its notes mention boats and children, though those details remain unverified. As railroads and steamers brought more visitors to the region, views like this helped shape how the public imagined its lakes and mountains.
