Four large glass negatives, each 18 by 22 inches, were exposed to form one wide panorama of Lake Placid and Mirror Lake as seen from the Stevens House, a hotel overlooking the water. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American scenery in the early 1900s, made such mammoth plates to capture resort country in its full sweep. Around 1902, Lake Placid was growing into a fashionable summer destination in the Adirondacks, drawing visitors for the lakes, the peaks and the hotel life. The panorama is worth studying for its scale, since it records the lake and surrounding mountains as the village was just beginning to expand.
