Mirror Lake, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, is captured here as a two-part panorama printed from a pair of large glass negatives, a format that let photographers record a wide view with great detail. The image was commissioned by the New York Central Railroad in the summer of 1890, when the company was promoting the Adirondacks as a destination for travelers seeking cool air and scenic lakes. Its mirror-like surface reflecting the surrounding peaks made the lake a favorite subject of the era's resort advertising.
