Few things say Adirondack camping like the open-sided shelter, or lean-to, pictured here at Raquette Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Camps of this kind gave sportsmen and vacationers a simple roof and a fire-facing wall while keeping them close to the lake and woods. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1909, when the firm was producing large numbers of views of American scenery for travel promotion. The picture is a useful record of how summer camping in the region was practiced in the early 1900s.
