Saranac Lake's Broadway, pictured here around 1909, was the commercial spine of a village that had grown up as a health resort, where tuberculosis patients came for the clear mountain air. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, sold views like this one to travelers and postcard buyers, so the street appears busy and orderly, lined with storefronts and the signs of a town that catered to visitors. Look closely at the buildings and the street itself for the modest, working character of an early twentieth-century Adirondack village.
