Upper Saranac Lake, photographed from the grounds of the Saranac Inn, captures the resort landscape that drew visitors to the Adirondacks in the early 1900s. Railroad travel brought vacationers north from New York and other eastern cities to hotels on the lakes, where they went boating and fishing and took in the forested hills. The large 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its scenic views of American places, which were widely sold for tourism and promotion.
