Ralph's Hotel stood on the shores of Upper Chateaugay Lake in New York's Adirondack Mountains, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative captures it in the years between 1900 and 1905. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views of American resorts and scenic places, often to encourage rail travel and vacations. In that period, Adirondack hotels drew city visitors who came to fish, boat, and escape summer heat. The large glass plate would have produced sharp, detailed prints, which helps explain the company's popularity with travelers and promoters.
