Loon Lake and Chase's Hotel sit together in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York, the pairing that gives this view its title. Between 1900 and 1910, when the glass negative was made, the region's lakes and wooded hills were drawing growing numbers of city visitors by rail, and lakeside hotels catered to summer guests seeking fresh air and time on the water. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, issued large numbers of views of American resorts and scenery for travel promotion, so the scene reflects how the Adirondacks were being presented to the public. The plate is marked with the company's catalog number, which helps researchers trace it within the firm's output.
