Lower Loon Lake sits in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York, and this view is one of the many lakeside scenes the Detroit Publishing Company made during its wide-ranging survey of American scenery in the years around 1900. The company, based in Detroit, sold hand-colored and black-and-white photographs by the thousands to railroads, hotels, and travelers, and the Adirondacks were a favorite destination for wealthy vacationers arriving by rail to escape city summers. This glass negative, at 8 by 10 inches, was made as a master for prints, and it was later donated to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 before entering the Library of Congress collection.
