Peter's Rock, a granite outcrop above Lower St. Regis Lake, offers the vantage point for this view of Paul Smith's Hotel, one of the best-known resorts in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many of its images for rail and resort promotion in the early 1900s, sent photographers across the country to record places like this, and the hotel's sprawling lakeside buildings and the canoes on the water show the leisure travel that drew visitors to the region. Paul Smith's grew from a backwoods inn into a full resort that catered to wealthy guests seeking fishing, boating, and mountain air, which makes this glass negative a useful record of the Adirondack resort era.
