The Hotel Ampersand stood on the shore of Lower Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and this glass negative shows its lakefront with a few canoes drawn up nearby. Between 1900 and 1910, the Adirondacks drew steady numbers of summer visitors who came by rail to escape the city, and hotels like this one depended on that trade. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, produced many views of American resorts and scenic places for railroads and travel promotion. The large 8 x 10 inch plate preserves fine detail in the water, boats, and buildings.
