Saint Regis Mountain rises above the still water of Spectacle Ponds in the Adirondacks of northern New York, and this view, made on a glass dry plate between 1900 and 1910, pairs the peak with canoes resting on the lake. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, sold views like this to travelers and railroads eager to promote the region as a summer retreat. Saint Regis, one of the higher peaks in the Adirondack range, drew visitors who came by rail to the Lake Placid area and then by boat and trail into the backcountry. The large 8 by 10 inch negative gives the scene fine detail in the water and shoreline.
