A small steamboat, the Towahloondah, waits at a pier on an Adirondack lake in this view, with the landing and its passengers' route set against the wooded shoreline. Around 1889, steamers like this carried vacationers between hotels, camps, and docks, and the Adirondacks had become a popular destination for city visitors seeking cool summers and fishing. The photograph was taken by Seneca Ray Stoddard, a prolific chronicler of the region whose views helped shape how the mountains and their resorts were seen. The date is approximate and comes from an older caption card.
