Tamarack cottage, one of the lodgings at the Antlers on Raquette Lake, shows the rustic resort life that drew visitors to the central Adirondacks in the decades around 1900. Wealthy families and sportsmen traveled by rail and steamboat to the lake to fish, boat, and escape the summer heat of the cities. The picture was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American scenery and resorts for sale to tourists and railroads. Its plates offer a close record of how these wooded retreats looked before the mid-century.
