Few views in the Adirondacks are as specific as this one: a spruce cottage at the Antlers on Raquette Lake, a resort community in the New York mountains. Its rustic log-and-bark style reflected the region's fashion for woodsy retreats, where wealthy visitors came by steamboat to fish, boat, and escape the summer heat of the cities. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold travel views of American scenery in the early 1900s, made pictures like this one to promote such destinations. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative shows the level of detail the company's large-format work could capture.
