A rustic cottage, named in its record as a birch cottage, sits at the Antlers on Raquette Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Around 1900 the lake drew summer visitors who stayed in hotels and private camps, and log and bark buildings like this one were part of a popular "camp" style in which guests enjoyed comfortable lodging while playing at backwoods life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made and sold views of American scenery and resorts, produced the glass plate negative, and its photographs were widely bought by travelers as souvenirs.
