From a point on the shore, this 8 by 10 inch glass negative records Lower Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York, one of a chain of lakes that drew summer visitors at the turn of the twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views like it between about 1900 and 1910, selling images of scenic American places to railroads, travel promoters and the public. The Saranac Lakes region was also known as a health retreat, since its cool mountain air attracted patients seeking treatment for tuberculosis, so scenes of its calm water carried a reputation for rest and recovery. Pictures like this one show how the lakes were presented to travelers of the era.
