Set on the lower end of Saranac Lake, this resort house reflects the wave of hotels that drew city visitors into the Adirondacks after the Civil War. The photograph is credited to Seneca Ray Stoddard, the Glens Falls photographer and guidebook publisher who documented the region's lakes, hotels and mountains for summer travelers. The catalog date of about 1890 comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, but it fits the period when lakeside resorts were at their height. Stoddard's views help show how the Adirondacks were presented to visitors at the time.
