Hotel Ampersand, a lakeside resort at Saranac Lake, is the subject here, one of the large summer hotels that drew well-to-do city visitors to the Adirondacks in the late 1800s. The caption card's notes list hotels and canoes, a reminder that boating and lakeside leisure were central to the region's appeal. The photographer, S.R. Stoddard of Glens Falls, New York, produced a large body of Adirondack views for tourists and collectors. The circa 1890 date comes from the card and has not been independently verified, so treat it as an estimate.
