Four-horse tally-ho coaches were a familiar sight around Blue Mountain Lake in the 1880s, when summer visitors reached remote Adirondack resorts by rail and then by road. S.R. Stoddard, a Glens Falls photographer known for his views of the region's hotels and scenery, issued this picture as a numbered card. The record's date and details come from an old caption card and have not been verified. Even so, the scene reflects how the Adirondacks were becoming a popular retreat for wealthy vacationers in the late nineteenth century.
