Scarface Mountain rises above the Saranac Lake area in this view taken from Ames Mills, a small mill settlement in the Adirondacks. The glass negative was made between 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of scenic views of American landscapes and resorts. By that time the Adirondacks had become a popular summer destination, and Saranac Lake drew visitors seeking rest cures. The picture pairs a working mill site with wooded mountain country, showing how lumbering and tourism coexisted in the region.
