Whiteface Mountain, rising above the water at Lake Placid, anchors this view of the central Adirondacks in upstate New York. The glass negative was made between 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document resorts, towns, and scenery for sale as views and postcards. By then Lake Placid was a popular summer retreat drawing visitors to its lake and surrounding peaks, and it would later host the 1932 Winter Olympics. Its 8 by 10 inch format gives the lake and mountain a sharp, detailed clarity.
