From Shingle Bay Point, this 8 by 10 inch glass negative looks out over Lower Saranac Lake toward the surrounding Adirondack peaks. The Detroit Publishing Company, which included William Henry Jackson's work in its catalog, sold views like this one for travel promotion in the years around 1900. The Saranac Lakes had by then become a popular summer destination for well-to-do visitors, and the village was also known as a health resort for people seeking treatment for tuberculosis. The negative's 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado shows how such views moved between collections over time.
