Whiteface Mountain, one of the high peaks of the Adirondacks, rises above the Wilmington Notch in this view, with the Ausable River system tying the valley together below. The Lake Placid area had become a popular summer resort by the early 1900s, drawing visitors by rail who wanted scenery to take home. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative, sold such views to travelers and tourist shops across the country. The record gives a date range of about 1905 to 1920, so the photograph captures the Adirondacks as the resort trade was growing.
