A wooden footbridge spanning the gorge above the High Falls near Wilmington, New York, sets this view apart from the many waterfall scenes in the Adirondacks, and the title's reference to Lake Placid points to the resort region that drew visitors there. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1920, produced views like this to promote travel and tourism across the country. Its photographers often included walkways, bridges, and paths so viewers could see how visitors reached and experienced a site. The picture offers a record of how people once came to admire the rugged scenery of the Adirondack Mountains.
