Avalanche Lake sits in a narrow, steep-walled gorge in the High Peaks region, and this view turns the camera toward the rock rather than the water, which is what makes the subject feel so enclosed. The print was made around 1888 by S.R. Stoddard, a photographer based in Glens Falls, New York, who sold views of the Adirondacks to summer visitors and tourists arriving by rail. It appears as No. 55 in a published series of Adirondack views from about 1889, a format that helped bring the region's wilderness scenery to people who would never make the trek themselves.
