Lower Au Sable Lake lies in Essex County in the Adirondack high peaks of northern New York, and this view shows its still water framed by wooded slopes. Stoddard, a Glens Falls photographer who sold large numbers of scenic views, made it around 1889, when visitors were arriving in growing numbers after William H. H. Murray's 1869 guidebook popularized the region. Pictures like this helped shape how the public imagined the mountains: remote, unspoiled, and within reach by rail and guideboat. The lake's calm surface and the forest around it are the real subject here.
