Avalanche Lake is a small, deep lake tucked among steep cliffs in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains, and this view of it was made around 1888 by S.R. Stoddard of Glens Falls, New York. Stoddard was one of the best-known commercial photographers of the Adirondacks, and his views were sold as stereographs and bound albums to a growing number of summer visitors. The print is numbered 56 in a series titled *Adirondack Views*, which shows how such scenes were packaged for tourists who were just beginning to reach the wilderness by rail and guided trail.
