Saranac Lake's central station was the gateway for many visitors to the Adirondack village in the early 1900s, when the town was known as a center for tuberculosis treatment. Edward Livingston Trudeau's sanatorium work from the 1880s drew patients who arrived by train, so the depot was a busy point of arrival for people seeking the mountain air. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that documented American towns, railways and scenic places for sale to travelers and publishers. The view offers a record of how the railroad shaped life in a resort town of that era.
