Few villages in the Adirondacks are as closely tied to tuberculosis care as Saranac Lake, and this view shows its reception hospital, where newly arrived patients were received and assessed before being sent on to cottages or boarding houses. The village drew people from across the country after Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau began treating patients there in the 1880s, believing that fresh air and rest could help the disease. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large-format views of resorts, towns and scenery for travelers and railroads, recorded the village in the years before 1920, so the picture captures a community built around the cure.
