From the water, the Wawbeek Inn stands on the shore of Upper Saranac Lake, one of the chain of lakes in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. The hotel was a summer resort that drew visitors who arrived by rail at Saranac Lake and continued by boat, and this view shows the lake as guests would have first seen it. The Detroit Publishing Company made the image as part of its large body of travel views, which were sold to promote resorts and scenic destinations across the country in the early twentieth century. Its 8 by 10 inch glass negative records the fine detail of the building and shoreline that smaller prints could not capture.
