Douglas Road runs through the Saranac Lake country in the Adirondacks, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made around 1909, captures a rural road edged by forest with the mountains rising beyond it. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of views of American scenery and resorts in the early twentieth century, made this picture, and its catalog number places it in the firm's extensive commercial output. The Adirondacks had drawn wealthy summer visitors and health seekers to the Saranac Lakes since the late nineteenth century, so roads like this one carried the traffic that linked lodges, camps and villages to the lakes.
