Upper St. Regis Lake, tucked into the Adirondack High Peaks region of northern New York, is the subject here, and the canoes resting on or drifting across its water signal the lake's appeal to summer visitors around 1900. By then the Adirondacks had become a popular retreat for city dwellers escaping heat and smoke, and wilderness lakes like this one drew steady traffic from hotels, guide services, and private camps. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document resorts, rail routes, and scenic places for promotional use. Its 8 by 10 inch format gave the crisp detail that later made these views prized by collectors and historians.
