Bluff Point, New York, is the setting for this view of the Hotel Champlain, with the Adirondack Mountains rising in the distance behind the resort. The 8 by 10 inch glass dry-plate negative was made between 1900 and 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed scenic places and hotels to encourage rail travel. Large lakeside hotels like this one drew summer visitors from distant cities, and their promotional views often gave the mountains as much attention as the buildings. The image appeared in the company's 1906 catalog.
